The paleo diet is one designed to keep you healthier, stronger, and leaner. It is a diet based on the eating habits and the foods consumed by people who existed during the Paleolithic era. Before the advent of agriculture and modern food processing, before additives, artificial flavorings and preservatives, the cavemen ate only natural foods that fueled them with energy for the day. The paleo diet imitates this plan, recommending all-natural foods, free of artificial substances that are harmful to our health. A wide range of food choices is allowed in the paleo diet, the most major of which are discussed below.
Meats and Eggs:
The most important food items included in the paleo diet are meat and eggs. Meat can also mean fish. The meat consumed in the paleo diet should preferably be of the lean type. High-fat meats tend to burden the body with excess fat, which could result in obesity. Meat from any animal can be consumed – pork, beef, poultry, venison, mutton, buffalo, game, etc. In addition to meat, eggs are also highly recommended as a protein source in the paleo diet. In many diets only the egg white is consumed, whereas in the paleo diet the whole egg can be eaten, as many proponents of it claim it is good for one’s health. Of course it’s much better to consume eggs that come from free-range chickens than from caged chickens, as the first are much healthier.
All kinds of vegetables, expect green beans, peas, and potatoes, can be consumed in the paleo diet. Paleo vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked. Some of them are listed below:
Various types of fruit, except those with high sugar content, are allowed in the caveman diet. Fruits of the dry variety, especially, can be consumed in large amounts. Here is a list of the major fruit items recommended in the paleo diet:
Nuts and Seeds:
Nuts and seeds are food items that are included in the paleo diet list, with the exception of peanuts and legumes. Some do not eat cashews, either. Since dairy products aren’t allowed in the paleo diet, nuts and seeds often provide a healthy substitute. Unsweetened almond and coconut milk are used, for example, instead of cow milk.
Oils that come from plants, such as olive oil, coconut oil, and nuts’ oils are also included in the paleo diet food list. However, the best and most highly recommended type of oil is fish oil, due to its many healthy, all-natural benefits.
Beverages like tea are often recommended in the caveman diet. Still, water is the most important drink. Pure water helps cleanse our systems and is free from preservatives or artificial flavorings. Keep in mind that sweet beverages contain sugars and artificial sweeteners that should be avoided. Consumption of alcohol is also not recommended by the paleo diet.
Foods That Are Avoided in the Paleo Diet:
- Refined Sugars
- Starchy Tubers
- Dairy Products
- Corn Oil
- Cottonseed Oil
- Peanut Oil
- Soybean Oil
If you’re following the paleo diet, make sure to eat all of the aforementioned food items for a balanced and healthy nutrition. It might seem difficult at the beginning, as your favorite sweet desserts and snacks are prohibited, but once you’ve followed the diet regularly for some time, you will discover that your body no longer craves sweets. You will also gradually start feeling stronger and fitter, after reducing toxins in the food you consume. The paleo diet leads to a more energetic and lean physique, and promotes a healthy, ailment-free and longer life, effects all of which you will start experiencing more and more the longer you follow the caveman diet.
